Cathy Comic Strip is No More

At the age of five I began reading The New York  Daily News Cartoon/Comic Strip

I used to skip Cathy well all comic strips that I couldn't understand or thought was too mean (had too much violence). I would read my favorites: Blondie, Beetle Bailey, Curtis, Dennis The Menace, Mutts, Mother Grimm, Baby Blues Hagar the Horrible, Broom Hilda, Get Fuzzy, Zits, and the occasional Annie

But I would always come back and try to comprehend Cathy's reasons for not putting on a bathing suit or trying to tell her mother she hasn't found "the one", or why she constantly griped about her weight.

I could never understand the women plight  in her comic strip at this time till I reach the age of thirteen and could sniggle an some of her later comic strips: of Cathy talking to her adorable dog, and answering the door in a bath towel only to be faced with a new neighbor whose was attractive: OOPS!

So farewell Cathy, sometimes it takes maturing to laugh a little more.

Excerpt: from Yahoo News:

"Guisewite, 59, said she chose to end the largely autobiographical comic strip because she wanted more time with her 18-year-old daughter and her parents and because "other personal deadlines started becoming more pressing for me than the newspaper ones."
She said her "creative biological clock" was also urging her to try something else, although she isn't sure what that will be.

The best part about writing the comic, "besides the personal therapy," she said, was how she was able to connect with women
"It was just such a privilege to be able to be that voice for women," she said.

The final "Cathy" strip, will run in newspapers on Sunday, Oct. 3. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_cathy_calls_it_quits
